My XLIM has started throwing a check-pod or connection message now and then, and the flavour has gone a bit off. I suspect it needs a clean but I am not sure what is safe to wipe and what to leave alone. What is the proper way to clean it without wrecking anything?

A check-pod message is nearly always the contacts, so start there. Remove the pod and look at the gold contact pins in the device bay and the matching pads on the pod - if there is any liquid or residue, dry it thoroughly with a cotton bud (a tiny amount of residue you cannot see under normal light is usually the cause). Wipe the pod bay dry, never use water or alcohol inside the battery section, and make sure the airflow slot on the side is not clogged. The pod itself is not really meant to be deep-cleaned - the coil and cotton are sealed in - so once the flavour genuinely drops off rather than just needing a contact clean, that is the pod telling you it is spent. A fresh genuine XLIM pod brings the flavour straight back.

The cotton-bud on the contacts trick has fixed the check-pod error every single time for me. There is always a bit of invisible juice residue on the pins. Two seconds and it reads the pod again.

Cleaned the pins like you said and the error is gone. Flavour was still a bit flat so I put a new pod in and it is like a different device. Appreciate the step by step.
