I'm completely new to vaping and a bit overwhelmed by the liquid choices. I keep seeing "nic salts" and "e-liquid" treated as different things. What's actually the difference and which should a beginner use?

Great question, and one every beginner should understand before buying.

Nicotine salts: Made with nicotinic acid which allows higher nicotine concentrations (20mg, 10mg) without the harsh throat hit that would make freebase unpleasant at those levels. The nicotine absorbs faster than freebase. Designed for pod kits and low-wattage devices. Most come in 50/50 VG/PG (thin liquid, works well in pod coils). This is what most ex-smokers use.

Freebase nicotine (standard e-liquid): The original vaping liquid type. Works at all nicotine strengths but at 20mg+ gives a harsh throat hit. Usually comes in 3-12mg. More common in higher-wattage sub-ohm devices (like the VPrime) at 70/30 VG/PG.

For a beginner with an XLIM or similar pod kit: nic salts 20mg are almost always the right starting point. They deliver satisfying nicotine levels smoothly without harshness.

Nicotine salts for a pod kit, always. I went straight to 20mg nic salts and never felt the need to try freebase in my XLIM. It just works and it's satisfying. Don't overcomplicate it at first!

That was the clearest explanation I've found anywhere. Nic salts 20mg in my XLIM it is. Thank you for not overcomplicating it!
