The SlimStick uses XLIM SQ pods right? My nearest shop only had V-Filter brand pods and I'm not sure if they'll fit or work properly. They look like a slightly different shape to me. Can anyone confirm compatibility before I waste money on the wrong ones?

1.2ohm for a beginner from cigarettes is definitely the right recommendation. The 0.8ohm gives a more open draw and produces more vapour - great once you're settled but can be overwhelming at the start. 1.2ohm gives you that tight MTL draw that feels closest to a cigarette. Stick with it for a few weeks before experimenting.
