Been on 20mg salts since I switched in the spring and thought I would step down to 10mg. Three weeks in and the device is never out of my hand, I am going through nearly double the liquid, and I do not feel like I have gained anything. Is this normal or have I dropped too soon and should I go back up?
What you are describing is extremely common and it has a name people use for it - compensation. When the strength halves, most people unconsciously take more puffs, longer puffs and more frequent ones to reach the level they are used to, which is why the bottle empties twice as fast and why it can feel like standing still. A few things that people here report working. Step down in stages rather than halving in one jump, so 20mg to 15mg where your flavour is sold in that strength, or keep both a 20mg and a 10mg and alternate between them through the day rather than switching outright. Give each step a solid two to three weeks before you judge it, because the first week of any drop feels worse than the third. And keep an eye on whether you are reaching for it out of habit and boredom rather than actually wanting it, because habit is usually what doubles the puff count. Going back to 20mg for a while is not a failure, it is just recognising that the step was early - plenty of people go down, back up once, then down again successfully a month later. One practical note: lower strengths generally suit a slightly airier setup, so if you do stay at 10mg, opening the airflow a touch or moving to a lower resistance pod makes it more satisfying than grimly puffing away on a tight 1.2ohm setup. Our nic salt strength guide sets out what each strength actually suits. Worth saying plainly that this is practical vaping talk rather than medical advice, and if what you actually want is structured help to come off nicotine altogether, your local NHS stop smoking service is free and rather good at it.
I did exactly this and went back to 20mg after a month feeling like I had failed. Tried again in the winter, went 20 to 15 to 10 instead of straight down, and it barely registered that time. The staged version worked when the big jump did not.
Alternating the two bottles is a clever idea that I would not have thought of. Going to do that rather than jumping back up entirely, and give it another few weeks before I decide. Thanks for the honest answer rather than just telling me to push through.
