How to Prime an OXVA Pod Properly

Priming your pod properly is the quickest way to avoid burnt taste, weak flavour and a ruined first coil. Here is the right way to prime XLIM pods, NeXLIM coils and VPrime pods, with the wait times that matter.

Why priming matters

All pod vape coils have a cotton wick that needs to be saturated with e-liquid before the first use. If you fire a new pod or coil dry - even once - the cotton can burn instantly and you’ll get a permanent burnt taste that won’t go away even after the wick is wet. A ruined coil needs to be replaced. Priming takes 5 minutes and saves the pod entirely.

How to prime XLIM pods (Pro 3, 3 Ultra, Go 2)

1

Fill the pod completely

Open the top-fill silicone port and fill the pod with your e-liquid to the max fill line (2ml UK capacity). Don’t overfill - leave just a small gap at the top. Close the fill port firmly until you feel it click shut.

2

Wait 5-10 minutes

Set the filled pod aside for at least 5 minutes, ideally 10. This lets the e-liquid saturate the cotton wicking material fully. The thicker the e-liquid (higher VG), the longer you should wait - up to 15 minutes for 70/30 VG/PG blends.

3

Insert and set low wattage

Insert the pod into the device. On XLIM Pro 3, set wattage to the low end for that pod - start at 10 - 12W for a 0.8Ω pod. Take a few short draws (2-3 seconds) without inhaling deeply. This pulls liquid through the wick and confirms everything is saturating correctly.

4

Gradually increase wattage

After a few primer draws at low wattage, increase in 2-3W steps up to your preferred setting. Don’t jump straight to maximum - the wick needs time to establish a consistent flow pattern at lower power first. Full flavour usually arrives after the first 5-10 draws.

Optional extra step: Before inserting the pod, you can use a clean cotton swab or fingertip to add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the coil mesh via the pod’s coil opening (the hole at the bottom of the pod). This saturates the coil directly and cuts the priming wait to 3 - 5 minutes.

How to prime NeXLIM coils

NeXLIM uses a different system - you replace the coil inside a reusable pod shell. Priming the coil is slightly different from priming a disposable pod.

1

Fit the new coil into the pod shell

Insert the replacement coil into the bottom of the NeXLIM pod shell until it clicks securely. Make sure the coil is fully seated - a loose coil causes immediate dry hits.

2

Drop e-liquid directly onto the coil

Before closing the pod, add 3 - 4 drops of your e-liquid directly onto the visible mesh surface of the coil through the top opening. This saturates the wicking material from the coil side and significantly reduces the priming wait.

3

Fill the pod and wait

Fill the pod shell to the fill line. Wait 5 - 8 minutes with the coil in Eco mode setting. Don’t use Boost mode on a new coil - it delivers too much power to an unsaturated wick.

4

Start in Eco mode

Use Eco mode for the first 10-15 draws on a new NeXLIM coil. This saturates the dual mesh coil gradually. Only switch to Boost mode after you’ve confirmed you’re getting clean, consistent flavour without any dry or burnt notes.

Common priming mistakes

Firing before waiting

The most common mistake. Even 30 seconds is not enough - the cotton has layers and the innermost fibres take time to soak. A 5-minute minimum is not a recommendation, it’s a minimum.

Starting at maximum wattage

High wattage on an unsaturated wick burns the outer fibres instantly. Always start low and increase gradually - the coil performs the same over time, starting low just protects the break-in period.

Using a pod that’s nearly empty

A pod that runs dry during use (forgetting to refill) will burn just like a new unprimed pod. Always refill when the liquid level drops to around 25% - before the wick starts to draw air rather than liquid.

Shaking the pod to speed it up

Shaking doesn’t help - it creates bubbles and can push liquid away from the wick rather than into it. Just fill, wait, and you’ll get better results than any shortcut.

How long to wait - by e-liquid type

E-liquid typeWait timeNotes
50/50 PG/VG nic salt5 minutesThin liquid, soaks quickly
60/40 VG/PG nic salt7-8 minutesMost common UK nic salt blend
70/30 VG/PG shortfill10-15 minutesThick liquid, needs longer to saturate
80/20+ high VG15+ minutesUsually too thick for small MTL pods

Summary

Fill the pod, wait at least 5 minutes, start at low wattage, take a few short draws, then gradually increase. That’s it. The entire process adds 5 minutes to your first pod but completely eliminates burnt hits and extends coil life significantly - a well-primed XLIM pod can last 3 - 5 days vs 1 - 2 days for a rushed one.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to wait before using a new OXVA pod?
At minimum 5 minutes. 10 minutes is better for most e-liquids. If you’re using a thicker 70/30 VG blend, wait up to 15 minutes. The wait time is the most important factor - rushing it is the main reason for burnt hits on new pods.
Can I prime an OXVA pod faster?
Yes - add 3 - 4 drops directly onto the coil mesh through the pod opening before filling, then fill and wait 3 - 5 minutes instead of 10. This direct saturation of the mesh speeds the process reliably. You can also take a few very gentle auto-draws before the pod is installed on the device to pull liquid through by suction.
My new OXVA pod tastes burnt even after waiting - what’s wrong?
If you get a burnt taste from the very first draw despite priming, the pod may have a manufacturing defect, or the liquid didn’t fully saturate (try waiting longer and ensure the fill port is completely sealed). A genuine new burnt taste that doesn’t improve after 5 - 6 draws suggests a faulty coil - replace the pod.
Do I need to prime a NeXLIM pod the same way as an XLIM pod?
Similar process but with one extra step: add drops directly onto the coil mesh before filling, and always start in Eco mode on a new NeXLIM coil for the first 10-15 draws. Boost mode on a new coil can burn the dual mesh wick if it’s not fully saturated.

Priming guidance is based on standard pod vape practice and OXVA device coil specifications. Always follow any instructions included with your specific device or pod. 18+ only.
